Chapter Fourteen

Maggie let tears run down her cheeks all the way back. Where were her parents? She’d thought they would meet up with them along the way, but they’d not seen any sign of them. How she prayed they were both safe.

She constantly checked the golden-haired lass in front of her. The bairn was still completely unconscious. Perhaps it was best that she’d been drugged. She wasn’t as cold as Beatris had been, and she didn’t look as though she’d been starved. The other lass rode with Will.

They set a grueling pace, but Maggie would not stop or even slow it. Her mind churned with all they had discovered.

How many more lassies like Beatris, Geva, and Emma were out there? How many more orphans, children kidnapped from their homes or taken into service under false pretenses were sold for slavery or even worse, for twisted sexual desires? Her own mother had been loaded onto a ship by evil men intent on selling her as a slave. Seeing such depravity with her own eyes had changed her.

Though she’d sought out Randall Baines in the hopes of giving Molly closure, that one decision had completely changed her life and given her a new purpose. Could she convince her parents to support her in this search for the victims of the depraved? Was there a chance Will would want to embark on this journey with her?

Gavin drew his horse up next to her. “Will she live, Maggie?”

“Aye, I think so.”

Will drew up on the other side of her as soon as they reached a wider portion of the road. “Nice job back there, lass.”

She smiled at him. “My thanks.”

Gregor’s voice echoed behind her, “Your mother will be proud.”

“Though my bollocks are aching a wee bit from the sight of it,” Gavin said. “He deserved it, of course, but warn me next time so I can close my eyes first. ‘Twas painful to watch.”

To their surprise, they were greeted by two figures on horseback once they drew close to Will’s grandsire’s land. Maggie let out a sigh of relief when she realized it was her mother and father. “More lassies?” her mama asked, her eyes going wide at the sight of them.

Maggie pulled on the reins of her horse. “Aye, Mama. Two more. Geva and Emma were with Beatris.”

“Where did you find them?” Logan asked. “We’ve been all over Edinburgh searching for Baines, but no one we spoke to knew aught about him. It was as if he didn’t exist in Edinburgh.”

“Near the firth,” Will replied. “A large ship was coming close to shore, and there were many crates stacked up, probably bound for the east. These were the only two girls we found.”

“Maggie, you didn’t kill anyone, did you?”

“Nay, only maimed, Papa.”

They made it back to the small cottage, where two Ramsay guards were roasting meat outside for everyone. The others were gathered about.

Simone stood waiting in the doorway, and her face brightened the moment she saw the lasses. “You found them?”

“Aye, we did, but they’re asleep,” Maggie said.
